Dick Kerkering and Allan Barberio initially met in 1970 while working at the same Sarasota CPA firm. As they grew to know each other, they found that they shared a client service model different from that of their current employer. After a couple years, they made the decision to go out on their own and put their vision into action. They began Kerkering, Barberio & Co. by offering outsourced CFO services, tax preparation and business consulting.
As the company grew, Dick and Allan enjoyed the competitive advantages that a larger firm with quality people and a dedication to client service could offer. They continually added the necessary resources to serve their clients and the local market. Growth presented both challenges and opportunities, but they never waivered from their long-term strategies.
For Dick and Allan, the biggest challenge of starting Kerkering, Barberio & Co. was trying to balance the demands of a growing business and growing families, both of which take significant time and dedication. For anyone starting a practice today, they would recommend:
- Do the right thing for yourself and your clients.
- Dedicate yourself to client service.
- Have trust in your fellow partners.
- Be in it for the long run – forty years in business is the result of steady growth and dedication.
Those values combined with a commitment to hard work and dedication created what today has grown to be the largest locally owned CPA firm serving many thousands of clients in not only Sarasota and Manatee Counties, but nationally as well as globally.
Today, Dick and Allan stay busy, but in very different ways. Dick left public accounting in 1987. He relocated to Portland, Oregon where he worked as the CFO for Harder Mechanical Contractors for eighteen years until his retirement in 2006. Dick now resides in Sarasota but spends the summers in central Oregon. Allan retired from public accounting in 2005. He has been active in a number of business ventures and is currently the general manager of Emcee Electronics, Inc.
